Caring for Your Residual Limb as You Heal
Proper care of your residual limb is essential for a smooth recovery and successful prosthetic use. Your sutures or staples will remain in place until the incision is fully healed. To help manage swelling and promote optimal shaping of your limb, a stump shrinker will be used for edema control. During this time, you will also undergo an evaluation to determine your readiness for a preparatory prosthesis.

After Your Healing Has Progressed
As your recovery continues, UMES will provide ongoing care and support. Your prosthetist will assess the condition of your residual limb, discuss your medical history, and understand your unique needs and goals. Together, you will explore prosthetic options, including their benefits and limitations, to find the best solution for you. Additionally, your prosthetist will collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure a comprehensive approach to your rehabilitation. Once you’re ready, the process of designing and fabricating your custom prosthesis will begin, setting you on the path toward restored mobility and independence.
